After a severe storm, protect people first. Stay off the roof, avoid damaged trees and power lines, check the property from the ground and inside the home, and document what you can see. If there is an active leak, a roof opening, structural movement, or a fallen tree, request professional help promptly.
A damaged property can remain dangerous after the wind and rain stop.
Begin with the surrounding conditions, not the roof.
First 30 minutes
Confirm that the area is safe
Wait until severe weather has passed and local officials say it is safe. Check household members first. If you evacuated, do not return simply because the sky has cleared. From a safe position, watch for:
Downed or low power lines
Tree limbs resting on the house or tangled with utilities
Standing or moving water
Broken glass, exposed nails, and unstable debris
Gas odors, smoke, sparks, or fire
A sagging roofline, ceiling, wall, or floor
Cracking, shifting, or unusual structural noises
Do not touch a fallen power line or anything that may be in contact with one. If you smell gas, see fire, or believe the structure may be unstable, leave the area and contact emergency services or the utility.
First 24 hours
Limit additional damage when it is safe
Look for active water entry without walking beneath a sagging ceiling or approaching wet electrical equipment. If the room is safe, move furniture and valuables away from drips and place a container beneath the leak. Do not enter an attic with wet wiring, unstable decking, saturated ceiling material, extreme heat, or no safe walking surface.
Temporary roof protection is not a do-it-yourself project when it requires roof access. A wet, steep, tile, metal, or storm-damaged roof can be dangerous even for someone accustomed to home repairs. If material has been displaced or the roof has an opening, request professional temporary protection.
Photograph visible conditions before moving debris or beginning nonemergency cleanup — but never remain in a dangerous space merely to take another picture.

Document and arrange the right evaluation
Organize your photographs, notes, weather information, temporary-repair receipts, and contractor communications. Arrange a professional inspection if you see damage, find new interior moisture, know the property was exposed to hail or severe wind, or remain uncertain about the roof's condition.
Do not authorize broad permanent work until you understand what was damaged and what the recommended scope includes. The only exception is work necessary to make the building safe.
Not every post-storm concern requires the same response. Use the most serious observable condition, not the size of the storm or what happened to a neighboring property to decide how quickly to act.

Do not pull it away or cut supporting limbs yourself. The visible impact point may not show the full damage to decking, rafters, trusses, walls, or utilities. Tree removal, structural evaluation, utility work, and temporary roof protection may each need a different qualified professional.

How to check for roof damage safely
A homeowner's role is to observe, not diagnose. You can collect useful information without climbing a ladder or disturbing the roof.
Check from the ground
Walk the property only after confirming the area is safe. Use binoculars or your phone's zoom rather than getting closer to an elevated surface. Look for:
Missing, shifted, cracked, curled, or visibly lifted shingles
Displaced ridge caps, tiles, metal panels, or flashing
An uneven or sagging roofline
Damaged gutters, detached downspouts, bent fascia, or hanging soffit
Dents on gutters, vents, flashing, siding, garage doors, or outdoor equipment
Shingle granules, tabs, fasteners, or pieces of roofing on the ground
Limbs, punctures, or debris resting on the roof
Damage concentrated at edges, corners, ridges, valleys, and penetrations
Damage to gutters, vents, siding, screens, fencing, or vehicles confirms the property took impacts. It does not, by itself, prove the roofing material is damaged — a professional must evaluate the roof.
Check inside the home
Interior signs may appear immediately, during the next rainfall, or gradually as moisture travels through the roof assembly. Check safe, accessible areas for:
New ceiling or wall stains
Active drips or damp drywall
Bubbling paint or swollen trim
Musty odors or unusual indoor humidity
Water near a chimney, vent, skylight, or roof-to-wall transition
Damp insulation or water trails visible from a safe attic position
Daylight visible through a new opening
Do not approach a ceiling that is sagging or holding water, and do not touch wet wiring or fixtures. If the attic lacks a safe walking surface, stay at the access point and use a flashlight.
What not to do
Walk on a wet, steep, icy, damaged, tile, or metal roof
Lift shingles to see whether seals are broken
Remove roofing, flashing, or debris to inspect underneath
Pressure-wash, sweep, or scrub suspected impact marks
Use patch products that conceal the condition before inspection
Attempt temporary work near electrical, structural, or tree hazards
Storm damage should be evaluated by both cause and affected component. The same weather event can affect roofing material, flashing, drainage, siding, decking, and the interior in different ways.
Hail damage
Hail damage does not always resemble a clean hole. On asphalt shingles an inspector may find random impact marks, localized granule displacement, exposed asphalt, bruising, cracking, or fractures in the shingle mat. Tile can chip or crack. Metal roofing and accessories may show dents or coating damage.
From the ground, homeowners more often notice collateral evidence: dents in gutters, downspouts, vent caps, flashing, siding, screens, fencing, or outdoor equipment. Granules may collect near downspouts, though normal aging causes granule loss too.
Hail size alone cannot determine damage. Material, age, existing condition, impact angle, wind, storm duration, and exposure all affect the outcome. Even when nearby roofs were damaged, this roof still needs to be evaluated on its own evidence.
Wind damage
Wind may remove roofing material, but subtler damage is also possible. Shingles can lift and reseal, develop creases, or lose adhesion without disappearing from the roof. Ridge caps, edge materials, flashing, soffit, fascia, gutters, tiles, and metal panels can shift or loosen.
Edges, corners, ridges, and areas exposed to turbulence deserve close attention. Debris carried by wind creates a separate impact problem.
A reported wind speed does not prove property-specific damage. It only establishes a reason to inspect the relevant components.
Heavy rain and wind-driven water
Rain often reveals a weakness rather than creating an obvious puncture. Wind-driven water may enter beneath displaced material or through small separations at flashing, valleys, chimneys, vents, skylights, or roof-to-wall intersections. Damaged or overwhelmed gutters can send water toward fascia, walls, or the foundation.
An inspection should distinguish a storm-created opening from long-term deterioration, improper installation, failed sealant, clogged drainage, or another pre-existing condition.
More than one cause may be present at the same time. The report should say which conditions appear storm-related and which do not.
Falling trees and debris
Branches and airborne debris can puncture roofing and underlayment, crush decking, break gutters, or damage rafters and trusses. The affected area may extend well beyond the visible object, and a branch resting on the roof can shift suddenly while it is being cut or removed.
Keep people away from the impact area. Tree removal should wait until the appropriate professionals have evaluated structural stability, utilities, safe removal, and temporary weather protection.
Do not remove the tree yourself. Structural evaluation, utility work, and roof protection may each need a different qualified professional.
Snow, ice, and freeze damage
Snow and ice are secondary concerns across most of M&M's Texas and Louisiana markets, but unusual winter events can still affect roofs. Ice can block drainage or contribute to water backing beneath vulnerable materials. Freeze-thaw movement may expose existing weaknesses around flashing, penetrations, sealants, and drainage components.
Do not climb onto an icy roof or attempt to break ice away from roofing components. After an unusual freeze, check accessible interiors, gutters, and roof edges from the ground.
Request an inspection if you find displacement, moisture, or drainage problems after a freeze.

Yes. Water must pass through multiple layers and may travel along decking, framing, underlayment, or a penetration before it reaches a finished ceiling. Some damaged components do not admit water during every rainfall.

An inspection should separate storm damage from wear, installation defects, mechanical damage, and maintenance problems. Finding an older condition does not prove the storm caused it — and an older roof is not automatically free of new storm damage.

Insurance may become part of the response, but the roofing contractor and insurer have different jobs. The contractor documents physical conditions and prepares a repair scope. The insurer interprets the policy and makes coverage decisions.

Get the exact legal business name, not just the name on the truck. Search the Texas or Louisiana Secretary of State business registry and confirm the entity is active. A name that does not appear anywhere in public records is a reason to stop.

A legitimate roofing company has an office, warehouse, or shop you can visit. Look the address up on Street View. A vacant lot, a mailbox store, or an out-of-state address means the company is not locally established — and may be gone when a warranty issue appears.
